Recover Health-care Costs from Tobacco Industry

  Nova Scotia is taking steps to hold the tobacco industry

accountable for past actions that led to increased tobacco use

in the province.

     Justice Minister Ross Landry says the province will work

with Manitoba to hire a law firm to help the provinces recover

health-care costs.

     New Brunswick, Ontario, British Columbia and Newfoundland

and Labrador are already pursuing litigation, and Quebec and

Alberta have announced their intention to pursue lawsuits.

     Health and Wellness Minister Maureen MacDonald applauded the

other provinces for their efforts to hold the tobacco industry

accountable. She says taking this step is a commitment in Nova

Scotia's 2011 Tobacco Control Strategy.

Procter & Gamble Recalls Mouthwash

OTTAWA - Health Canada is advising Canadians that Procter & Gamble is conducting a voluntary recall of "Oral B Anti-Cavity Dental Rinse- Alcohol Free" (NPN 02129930) and "Oral-B Anti-Bacterial with Fluoride - Alcohol Free Daily Use Mouthrinse" (DIN 02130823).

The products are being recalled due to possible microbial contamination. Procter & Gamble is requesting that retailers immediately stop sale of these products and is also advising consumers to discard the affected product and contact them for a refund by calling 1-800-566-7252, Monday to Friday between 9:00a.m. to 5:00p.m.

According to Procter & Gamble, if present, the microbial level poses virtually no risk to healthy people. However, people with severely weakened immune systems, such as those with cystic fibrosis may be more susceptible to adverse health effects. As such, Health Canada reminds Canadians who have concerns about these products to consult with their health care practitioner.

Health Canada is monitoring the recall by Procter & Gamble. Should new additional safety information be identified, Health Canada will provide an update to Canadians.
